JEE Main 2025 Apr 7 Shift 1, Chemistry Q19: Isomerism In Co-ordination Compounds
JEE Main2025Apr 7, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.
An octahedral complex having molecular composition Co.5NH.Cl.SO has two isomers A and B. The solution of A gives a white precipitate with AgNO solution and the solution of B gives white precipitate with BaCl solution. The type of isomerism exhibited by the complex is,
- A
Co-ordinate isomerism
- B
Linkage isomerism
- C
Ionisation isomerism
- D
Geometrical isomerism
Solution
The two isomers differ in which anion sits inside the coordination sphere and which sits outside as a free ion:
- Isomer A: — the free Cl in solution gives a white precipitate of AgCl with AgNO.
- Isomer B: — the free SO in solution gives a white precipitate of BaSO with BaCl.
This swap of an anion between the coordination sphere and the ionisation sphere is the defining feature of ionisation isomerism.
