JEE Main 2025 Jan 22 Shift 1, Chemistry Q10: Properties of Alkyl Halides (Halo Alkanes) & Aryl Halides (Halo Arenes)
Given below are two statements :
Statement I : CH O CH Cl will undergo S1 reaction though it is a primary halide.
Statement II : will not undergo S2 reaction very easily though it is a primary halide.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- A
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
- B
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- C
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- D
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Statement I: Ionisation of CHOCHCl gives the carbocation CHO, which is strongly stabilised by lone-pair donation from oxygen (oxocarbenium resonance). This anchimeric stabilisation makes the S1 pathway feasible despite the carbon bearing Cl being primary.
Statement II: Neopentyl chloride, , has a bulky -butyl group adjacent to the reacting carbon. The three methyl groups sterically block backside attack by the nucleophile, so S2 is exceptionally slow.
Both statements are correct.
