JEE Main 2025 Jan 24 Shift 1, Chemistry Q9: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

JEE Main2025Jan 24, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.

Given below are two statements I and II.

Statement I : Dumas method is used for estimation of "Nitrogen" in an organic compound.

Statement II : Dumas method involves the formation of ammonium sulphate by heating the organic compound with conc HSO.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. A

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  2. B

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

  3. C

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

  4. D

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Dumas method does estimate nitrogen, but it does so by combusting the organic sample with CuO in a CO atmosphere to liberate N gas, whose volume is measured over KOH. Statement I is therefore correct.

Formation of ammonium sulphate by heating with concentrated HSO is the basis of the Kjeldahl method, not Dumas. Statement II is incorrect.

Option (4): Statement I true, Statement II false.
