Q.

Given below are two statements :

Statement – I : Compound (X), shown below, dissolves in solution and has two chiral carbon atoms

Statement – II : Compound (Y), shown below, has two carbons with sp hybridization, one carbon with sp and one carbon with sp hybridization

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  2. B

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

  3. C

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  4. D

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Solution

Statement I: The —COOH group is acidic enough to react with (releasing ), so X dissolves. The cyclopentane ring has two adjacent ring carbons each bearing four different groups (one carries the acyl group, the other carries —COOH), giving two chiral centres. True.

Statement II: The cumulated system contains: two sp carbons (the alkyl carbons at the left), one sp carbon (the middle =CH–), and one sp carbon (the central allenic/ketenic carbon of C=C=O). True.

Both statements are correct.
