Consider a solution of $C O_{2} (g)$ dissolved in water in a closed container.

Which one of the following plots correctly represents variation of $lo g$ (partial pressure of $C O_{2}$ in vapour phase above water) [y-axis] with $lo g$ (mole fraction of $C O_{2}$ in water) [x-axis] at 25°C ?

Solution

By Henry’s law, $p_{C O_{2}} = K_{H} x_{C O_{2}}$ .

Taking $lo g$ of both sides: $lo g p_{C O_{2}} = lo g K_{H} + lo g x_{C O_{2}}$ .

This is a straight line with slope 1 (positive) and y-intercept $lo g K_{H}$ (positive for $K_{H} > 1$ ). That matches plot (3).
