Q.

Sodium fusion extract of an organic compound (Y) with and chlorine water gives violet color to the layer. 0.15 g of (Y) gave 0.12 g of the silver halide precipitate in Carius method. Percentage of halogen in the compound (Y) is ___________. (Nearest integer).

(Given : molar mass g mol C : 12, H : 1, Cl : 35.5, Br : 80, I : 127)

Solution

The violet colour in the layer (after treatment with chlorine water) is the standard layer-test signature of iodide — chlorine displaces to give free , which dissolves in the organic layer giving a violet colour. So the halogen in Y is iodine, and the precipitate is AgI (M = 235 g/mol).
