Q.

A mixed ether (P), when heated with excess of hot concentrated hydrogen iodide produces two different alkyl iodides which when treated with aq. NaOH give compounds (Q) and (R). Both (Q) and (R) give yellow precipitate with NaOI. Identify the mixed ether (P):

  1. A

    1

  2. B

    2

  3. C

    3

  4. D

    4

Solution

(excess, hot) cleaves both C-O bonds of the mixed ether to give two different alkyl iodides.

Both alkyl iodides, on treatment with aq. , give alcohols Q and R that respond positively to the iodoform test (, yellow ppt of ).

The iodoform test requires either ethanol () or a secondary alcohol of type .

So Q and R must be ethanol and a secondary alcohol such as butan-2-ol ().

The corresponding alkyl iodides are and , which trace back to ethyl sec-butyl ether: , matching option (1).
