Two resistors of resistance, 100 $Ω$ and 200 $Ω$ are connected in parallel in an electrical circuit. The ratio of the thermal energy developed in 100 $Ω$ to that in 200 $Ω$ in a given time is :

Solution

In a parallel connection, both resistors have the same potential difference $V$ across them.

Heat dissipated per unit time: $P = \frac{V ^{2}}{R}$ , so $P \propto \frac{1}{R}$ at fixed $V$ .

$\frac{P _{1}}{P _{2}} = \frac{R _{2}}{R _{1}} = \frac{200}{100} = 2 : 1$ .
