SO $_{2}$ in the atmosphere is converted to the more harmful SO $_{3}$ (and ultimately H $_{2}$ SO $_{4}$ ) through oxidation.

Particulate matter (such as soot) provides surfaces that catalyse the oxidation of SO $_{2}$ to SO $_{3}$ .

Ozone oxidises SO $_{2}$ directly: SO $_{2}$ + O $_{3}$ $\to$ SO $_{3}$ + O $_{2}$ .

Hydrogen peroxide oxidises SO $_{2}$ in aqueous droplets: SO $_{2}$ + H $_{2}$ O $_{2}$ $\to$ H $_{2}$ SO $_{4}$ .

Hydrocarbons do not appreciably enhance SO $_{2}$ oxidation. Hence (a), (b), and (d) only.
