NEET2022Chemistry
Q.
The pollution due to oxides of sulphur gets enhanced due to the presence of:
(a) particulate matter
(b) ozone
(c) hydrocarbons
(d) hydrogen peroxide
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- A
(a), (b), (d) only
- B
(b), (c), (d) only
- C
(a), (c), (d) only
- D
(a), (d) only
Solution
SO in the atmosphere is converted to the more harmful SO (and ultimately HSO) through oxidation.
Particulate matter (such as soot) provides surfaces that catalyse the oxidation of SO to SO.
Ozone oxidises SO directly: SO + O SO + O.
Hydrogen peroxide oxidises SO in aqueous droplets: SO + HO HSO.
Hydrocarbons do not appreciably enhance SO oxidation. Hence (a), (b), and (d) only.
