Transposons are mobile genetic elements (jumping genes) that can move from one location in the genome to another. Insertion of a transposon into a coding region can disrupt the gene and abolish its expression.

This property is exploited in gene silencing strategies, where transposon insertions are used to identify and inactivate specific genes in functional genomics studies.
