The Hershey-Chase experiments with radioactively labelled bacteriophage T2 (${}^{32}$P for DNA, ${}^{35}$S for protein) showed conclusively in 1952 that only the DNA entered the bacterial host and directed phage replication. Griffith's transformation experiments and Avery's biochemical follow-up pointed in this direction but did not provide the same unambiguous proof.
