Solution

System acceleration: $a = \frac{F}{m _{A} + m _{B}} = \frac{10}{5} = 2$ m/s $^{2}$ .

The contact force on B equals the force needed to accelerate B alone: $N = m_{B} a = 3 \times 2 = 6$ N.
