Solution

Velocity just before impact (downward, taken negative): $v_{i} = - 2 g h_{1} = - 2 \times 9.8 \times 40 = - 28$ m/s.

Velocity just after impact (upward): $v_{f} = + 2 g h_{2} = + 2 \times 9.8 \times 10 = 14$ m/s.

Impulse $J = Δ p = m (v_{f} - v_{i}) = 0.5 \times (14 - (- 28)) = 0.5 \times 42 = 21$ NS.
