A container has two chambers of volumes $V_{1} = 2$ litres and $V_{2} = 3$ litres separated by a partition made of a thermal insulator. The chambers contain $n_{1} = 5$ and $n_{2} = 4$ moles of ideal gas at pressures $p_{1} = 1$ atm and $p_{2} = 2$ atm, respectively. When the partition is removed, the mixture attains an equilibrium pressure of:

Solution

By energy conservation for ideal gas (internal energy depends on $n R T$ , with $U = \frac{f}{2} n R T = \frac{f}{2} P V$ ):

$\frac{f}{2} P_{1} V_{1} + \frac{f}{2} P_{2} V_{2} = \frac{f}{2} P_{mi x} (V_{1} + V_{2})$ .

$(1) (2) + (2) (3) = P_{mi x} (5) \Rightarrow 2 + 6 = 5 P_{mi x} \Rightarrow P_{mi x} = \frac{8}{5} = 1.6$ atm.
