NEET2025Chemistry
Q.

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: Benzenediazonium salt is prepared by the reaction of aniline with nitrous acid at 273–278 K. It decomposes easily in the dry state.

Statement II: Insertion of iodine into the benzene ring is difficult and hence iodobenzene is prepared through the reaction of benzenediazonium salt with KI.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

  1. A

Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

  2. B

Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect

  3. C

Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect

  4. D

Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Solution

Statement I is correct: aniline + HNO at 273–278 K gives benzenediazonium chloride, which is stable in cold aqueous solution but decomposes easily when dry.

Statement II is correct: direct electrophilic iodination of benzene is slow and inefficient; iodobenzene is conveniently prepared by treating benzenediazonium salt with KI (the diazo group is displaced by I).
