NEET2025Chemistry
Q.
The major product of the following reaction is:
- A
1
- B
2
- C
3
- D
4
Solution

Excess CHMgBr can attack both electrophilic carbons in the substrate.
At the aryl ketone (PhC(=O)): one equivalent of CH adds, giving after HO workup a tertiary alcohol PhC(CH)(OH).
At the nitrile (CN): Grignard addition gives an iminium magnesium salt that hydrolyses on acidic workup to a methyl ketone C(=O)CH (this is a classic way of converting RCN to RCOCH with MeMgBr).
The final product is PhC(CH)(OH)CHCHC(=O)CH, matching option (2).
