NEET2022Chemistry
Q.

Given below are two statements : -

Statement I :

The boiling points of aldehydes and ketones are higher than hydrocarbons of comparable molecular masses because of weak molecular association in aldehydes and ketones due to dipole-dipole interactions.

Statements II :

The boiling points aldehydes and ketones are lower than the alcohols of similar molecular masses due to the absence of H-bonding.

In the light of the statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. A

Both statements I and statements II are incorrect.

  2. B

Statement I is correct but statements II is incorrect

  3. C

Statements I is incorrect but statements II is correct.

  4. D

Both statements I and statements li are correct.

Solution

For molecules of comparable molar mass, the trend in boiling points is alcohol aldehyde or ketone hydrocarbon.

Aldehydes and ketones have polar C=O groups that participate in dipole-dipole attractions, which a non-polar hydrocarbon lacks. So Statement I is correct.

Alcohols additionally form intermolecular hydrogen bonds (O-H to O), an interaction unavailable to carbonyl compounds, so alcohols boil higher than the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. Statement II is correct as well.
