Innate immunity is present from birth and provides a non-specific, general defence against pathogens through physical, physiological, cellular and cytokine barriers.

Acquired immunity is pathogen-specific and develops over time. Humoral and cell-mediated immunity are both subdivisions of acquired immunity (mediated by B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes respectively).
