NEET2026Chemistry
Q.
The number of chlorine atoms present in the organic products X and Y of the following reactions, respectively are :

- A
3 and 3
- B
6 and 6
- C
6 and 3
- D
3 and 6
Solution
With anhydrous AlCl in dark and cold conditions, benzene undergoes electrophilic substitution and all six ring hydrogens are replaced, giving hexachlorobenzene CCl (X) which contains 6 chlorine atoms.
Under UV light at 500 K, benzene undergoes free-radical addition to give 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane CHCl (Y), which also contains 6 chlorine atoms.
So both X and Y contain 6 chlorine atoms each.
