Q.

Consider the following species :

SOCl, XeOF, ClF, ClF, XeF, SO, XeF, SF

List-I contains different molecular shapes and List-II contains total number of species with the same molecular shapes from the given species. Match each entry in List-I with the appropriate entry in List-II and choose the correct option.

List-IList-II
(P) See-saw(1) One
(Q) T-Shaped(2) two
(R) Trigonal Planar(3) three
(S) Square Pyramidal(4) four
(5) zero
  1. A

    P 1; Q 2; R 5; S 3

  2. B

    P 5; Q 4; R 2; S 3

  3. C

    P 3; Q 2; R 1; S 4

  4. D

    P 1; Q 3; R 5; S 4

Solution

Assign each species using VSEPR.

  • SOCl: S has 1 lone pair + 3 bonding (S=O, 2 × S–Cl) pyramidal.
  • XeOF: Xe has 1 lone pair + 5 bonds square pyramidal.
  • ClF: Cl has 2 lone pairs + 3 bonds T-shape.
  • ClF: Cl has 1 lone pair + 5 bonds square pyramidal.
  • XeF: Xe has 1 lone pair + 5 bonds square pyramidal.
  • SO: S has 1 lone pair + 3 bonds pyramidal.
  • XeF: Xe has 2 lone pairs + 3 bonds T-shape.
  • SF: S has 1 lone pair + 4 bonds see-saw.

Count by shape.

  • (P) See-saw: SF only one. P 1.
  • (Q) T-shaped: ClF, XeF two. Q 2.
  • (R) Trigonal planar: none of these species is trigonal planar zero. R 5.
  • (S) Square pyramidal: XeOF, ClF, XeF three. S 3.

Mapping P 1, Q 2, R 5, S 3 corresponds to option (A).
