Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : 1,2,3-Trihydroxypropane can be separated from water by simple distillation.
Statement (II) : An azotropic mixture cannot be separated by fractional distillation.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- C
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- D
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
1,2,3-Trihydroxypropane is glycerol. Glycerol decomposes near its normal boiling point, so simple atmospheric distillation is not used. It is purified by distillation under reduced pressure (or steam distillation). Statement I is therefore false.
Azeotropes boil at a constant composition that matches their vapour composition; fractional distillation cannot separate them. Statement II is true.
