A true palindromic DNA sequence reads the same on both strands in the 5' to 3' direction. The sequence 5' G A A T T C 3' / 3' C T T A A G 5' satisfies this and is the recognition site for the well-known restriction enzyme EcoRI.

EcoRI cuts between G and A on each strand, generating sticky (staggered) ends with overhanging AATT sequences. The other sequences listed are not palindromic in the strict double-stranded sense.
