Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R:

Assertion A: In equation $Δ_{r} G = - n F E_{ce l l}$ , value of $Δ_{r} G$ depends on $n$ .

Reason R: $E_{ce l l}$ is an intensive property and $Δ_{r} G$ is an extensive property.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Solution

$E_{ce l l}$ depends only on the half-cell reactions and concentrations — it does not change if you write the balanced reaction with different stoichiometric coefficients, so it is intensive.

$Δ_{r} G$ scales linearly with the number of moles of electrons transferred ( $n$ ), and is therefore extensive. The factor $n$ in $Δ_{r} G = - n F E_{ce l l}$ is exactly what makes it extensive while $E_{ce l l}$ stays intensive — so R correctly explains A.
