Q.

In a metre bridge experiment (see figure), the positions of the cell, E, and galvanometer, G, are interchanged. We shall observe in the galvanometer:

  1. A

    Only the right-sided deflection

  2. B

    Only the left-sided deflection

  3. C

There will be no deflection irrespective of the position of the jockey

  4. D

Both right-sided and left-sided deflection and at balance point, no deflection

Solution

The circuit shown is not stated to be at balance. After interchanging the positions of the cell and the galvanometer, the bridge condition is unchanged: at the balance point the galvanometer still shows zero, and away from it the deflection can be on either side depending on which way the jockey is moved. Hence both left and right deflections are possible, with zero at the balance point.
