Q.

The following plots show variation of velocity (v) with time (t), of a ball thrown vertically upward, and falling back. Which of the following plots is/are correct?

  1. A

    B only

  2. B

    A and E only

  3. C

    C only

  4. D

    D only

Solution

Taking upward as positive: initially velocity is positive and decreases linearly under constant downward acceleration . At the highest point . Beyond that, the ball falls back with increasing speed in the downward (negative) direction.

This produces a straight line of negative slope that crosses the t-axis from positive to negative velocity ; - matching graph C.
