Solution

Using work-energy theorem over the entire motion (start at rest, end at rest), the net work is zero.

Gravity acts over total distance $10 + 0.1 = 10.1$ m doing work $m g (10.1) = 2 \cdot 10 \cdot 10.1 = 202$ J.

Sand exerts force $F$ opposing motion over $0.1$ m, doing work $- 0.1 F$ .

Setting net work to zero: $202 - 0.1 F = 0$ , giving $F = 2020$ N.
