JEE Main 2026 Apr 6 Shift 2, Chemistry Q17: Introduction to Mechanism of Organic Reaction
Consider the following organic reaction sequence. Choose the final product from the following (consider the major product in all intermediate reactions):

- A
Benzene
- B
Phenol
- C
Propanol
- D
Chlorobenzene

Starting material: propanoic acid CHCHCOOH.
(i) NH/: propanamide CHCHCONH.
(ii) NaOH/Br (Hofmann bromamide): degradation to the amine with one fewer carbon: ethylamine CHCHNH.
(iii) HNO/HO at 0 °C: primary aliphatic amines give the corresponding alcohol with loss of N: ethanol CHCHOH.
(iv) PhNCl at 0 °C: primary alcohols reduce arenediazonium salts. The diazonium loses N and picks up H from the alcohol, while the alcohol is oxidised to an aldehyde:
PhNCl + CHCHOH CH (benzene) + CHCHO + N + HCl.
Final product = benzene.
