The product formed from the following reaction sequence is

Step (i): LiAlH $_{4}$ reduces the nitrile to a primary amine. C $_{6}$ H $_{5}$ -CN $\to$ C $_{6}$ H $_{5}$ -CH $_{2}$ -NH $_{2}$ (benzylamine).

Step (ii): NaNO $_{2}$ with HCl converts the aliphatic primary amine into a highly unstable alkyl diazonium ion C $_{6}$ H $_{5}$ -CH $_{2}$ -N $_{2}^{+}$ Cl $^{-}$ , which immediately loses N $_{2}$ to form a benzylic carbocation.

Step (iii): Water captures the carbocation to give the corresponding alcohol, C $_{6}$ H $_{5}$ -CH $_{2}$ -OH (benzyl alcohol).
