Solution

Foul-smelling Z indicates an isocyanide. From C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ Cl, isocyanide is formed using AgCN (silver cyanide directs N-attack), giving C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ NC.

From the amide, Hofmann bromamide degradation with Br $_{2}$ /NaOH gives the primary amine ethylamine (Y). The carbylamine reaction of this primary amine with CHCl $_{3}$ /ethanolic KOH yields the isocyanide C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ NC (Z).

So X = AgCN and Z = C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ NC.
