NEET2025Chemistry
Q.
Predict the major product 'P' in the following sequence of reactions:

- A
1
- B
2
- C
3
- D
4
Solution

Step (i) HBr in the presence of benzoyl peroxide adds in anti-Markovnikov fashion: Br adds to the less substituted carbon of the original alkene, giving a 2-bromo-1-methylcyclopentane.
Step (ii) KCN performs S2 substitution, replacing Br with CN, giving 2-methylcyclopentane-1-carbonitrile.
Step (iii) Na(Hg) in CHOH reduces the nitrile CN to a primary amine CHNH (Mendius reduction).
The final product has CH on one ring carbon and CHNH on the adjacent ring carbon, matching option (1).
