Step 1 (SN2 with CN $^{-}$ ): A = CH $_{3}$ CH $_{2}$ CH $_{2}$ CN (butanenitrile).

Step 2 (partial hydrolysis): B = CH $_{3}$ CH $_{2}$ CH $_{2}$ CONH $_{2}$ (butanamide).

Step 3 (Hofmann bromamide degradation): primary amide loses one carbon to give the next-lower primary amine, CH $_{3}$ CH $_{2}$ CH $_{2}$ NH $_{2}$ (propylamine).
